"The Chinese" Restaurant

So in an attempt to embrace Delhi more, Sandip and I have decided to try one new restaurant a week.  We are branching out from hotel restaurants and other places listed in our tour guide books and our "Love Delhi" book (written for ex-pats).

So armed with inspiration, we opened Sunday's weekend section had an overview of restaurants by a self proclaimed foodie. One section was on a place with amazing Chinese food. The author described how authentic the Chinese is, saying the Chinese is high quality, non-Indianized, and the Chinese is spicy, with good service.  For the life of us we could not figure out the name of the restaurant and it appeared to be nowhere in the article.  But after several readings, we realized that the name of the restaurant is literally "The Chinese," and references to "the Chinese" in the article were to the restaurant, not the food.

So we went to "The Chinese" restaurant tonight and the food was pretty amazing.  Spicy, yes but not a hint of Indian influence.  Our waiter explained that the owner is actually Indian.  He opened an Indian restaurant in China over 20 years ago.  He has since opened others in China, and our waiter was sent to one to teach about traditional Indian food.  As the years passed, many of his Chinese clients would travel to India and lament that there was not proper Chinese food, and "the Chinese" was born.  So Indian restaurant in China, Chinese restaurant in India.  What a world!
