Old Delhi

I took an organized tour of Old Delhi (which is in New Delhi, but still called Old Delhi) a little over a week ago  A guide took us through some of the winding streets where you can buy just about everything you want.  They are small, crowded, and even at 11am the stores were just starting to open.  It ironically was a very comfortable feeling for me, probably because in some ways it reminded me of Morocco.  The pictures don't do it justice because you can't capture the crowds, the buzz, the smells, the air.  But it is the best I can do.

Enjoy!

View down one of the streets

Wonder if there is a problem with electricity...

This is the street on which to get decorations.

Typical way of transporting items

Lots of bright beautiful decorative ribbon

And more fabrics.

This is Jain Street-where the Jain people live!

Nice doorway on Jain Street

Someone shopping for fancy outfits-I think it was wedding wear.  It is bridal season here.

Yummy!  This is for pani puri, which we can't eat on the street because it is made with water.  I am eagerly awaiting my homemade version when Sandip's parents come.  It is my favorite Indian dish.

This old machine makes patterns for jewelry.  All the blocks in the background are patterns.

Here are some of the patterns. You take that to a jeweler and have it custom made.

This was on every door.  I was told it wards off evil spirits

A view of the fabrics.

Typical mode to transport water around to those who need it.

Great and Caitlin in a bike rickshaw

Nuts and dried fruits vendor

View of the spice market from on high.  To get this view we climbed 5 flights of stairs.  On one flight there was a guy literally in a two foot offshoot of the stairs taking a shower.  We were like-oh sorry.

Also taken from on high.  These guys are making bread, and looks like they live there too.

We were told to cover our noses while walking by. Very strong.  Sandip would have loved it.

The main road in Old Delhi.  The end of our journey for now!
